Before you start
- A Sourceteller workspace.
- A Shopify login that can edit themes (the store owner, or staff with the Themes permission).
1 · Add your store as a source
- In your Sourceteller console, open Documents and add your store’s address (use your own domain if you have one).
- It finds and reads your product pages, policies and FAQ. Most stores take a few minutes.
- Upload anything that isn’t on the site — size guides, warranty terms, wholesale price lists — as PDF or Word files.
When you change prices or policies, re-check the site from Documents. Only pages that changed are read again.
2 · Copy your widget snippet
- In the console, open Integrations → Website widget and copy your snippet. It already contains your key.
- In the widget’s allowed domains, add both your own domain and your
your-store.myshopify.comaddress. The widget only loads on domains you allow.
<script async
src="https://sourceteller.com/sourceteller-widget.js"
data-key="pk_yourstore"></script>3 · Paste it into your theme
- In Shopify admin, open Online Store → Themes.
- Next to your current theme, click the … button, then Edit code.
- Under Layout, open
theme.liquid. - Find the closing
</body>tag near the end of the file and paste your snippet on the line just above it. - Click Save.
Paste the snippet above </body>, not after it, and don’t change any other line in the file.
4 · Check it works
- Open your store in a private browser window. The chat bubble appears in the corner.
- Ask something your policies answer, such as “What’s your return policy?”
- The answer should come with a numbered source linking to your policy page.
5 · Make it yours
In the widget settings, set the assistant’s name, colour, which side it sits on, its language, and the starter questions shoppers see. Shoppers can ask in any of 72 languages either way.
If the bubble doesn’t appear
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Your domain is in the widget’s allowed domains | The widget stays hidden on any domain you haven’t allowed — add both the custom and myshopify.com domains. |
The snippet is above </body> in theme.liquid | Snippets pasted into a section or after </body> may not load on every page. |
| You edited the published theme | Editing a draft or unpublished theme changes nothing on your live store. |
| Try a private window | Your browser may be showing a cached copy of the page. |
Good to know
- If you publish a different theme, add the snippet to that theme too.
- Shopify’s checkout pages don’t use your theme, so the widget doesn’t appear there.
- To remove the widget, delete the snippet line from
theme.liquidand save. - A Shopify App Store app with one-click install and order lookups is on the way; until then, the assistant answers from your store’s content, not live order data.
Questions
Does it work with every Shopify theme?
Yes — any theme where you can edit code. The snippet goes into theme.liquid, which every theme has.
Will it slow my store down?
The widget script loads asynchronously, so your pages render without waiting for it.
Can it look up orders?
Not yet. Order lookups come with the Shopify App Store app, which is on the way.
What does it cost?
No monthly fee. An answer is 7 credits, from one-off packs starting at $5; credits never expire.
